Excellent resource for the more adventurous hiker. Too many books about hiking in the southwest focus on all hikes; therefore, spending most of the text on shorter (<5 mile) hikes. Whitney isn't afraid of rock scrambling and trudging across streams so takes his readers on adventures to locations like Havasupai and The Subway. Excellent resource for the more adventurous hiker. I loved the pictures and the fact that the book has good directions to each of the areas. one negative comment, there are only one or two hikes that are rated "good for kids". I happen to think kids can do more than they are given credit for. I will be purchasing a paper copy of this book (high praise!). Great trails listed here but a single book to capture what those four states offer? It's like buying a greatest hits album whose 12 tracks are equally divided between the greatest hits of Elvis, the Beatles, the Beach Boys and the Rolling Stones - sounds great on the radio but doesn't really tell you those artists' stories.
