This is the book you read before you go on your trips, as it is really too heavy to want to lug around. Nonetheless, this book gives a nice overview of the history, contemporary culture, and travel highlights of the country and is a surprisingly good read. The writers really did their homework. Page after page I was continually surprised by some little anecdote or fact e.g. more books are published and bought here per capita than anywhere else in the world (p. 61), that 1 in 10 Icelanders publishes something in their lifetime (p. 74), that women held a mass strike in 1975 to mark the beginning of the United Nations Women's Decade (p. 78), that they have amongst the highest life expectancies (p. 61), that their language has changed little since the age of the Vikings (p. 89), that chess was a common pastime in Iceland through the Middle Ages and that there have been 11 grandmasters in chess from Iceland over the years (p. 256). I could go on. In fact, I continued to read it long after I returned from my travels. For those who are looking for detailed travel information, I would suggest the Lonely Planet Iceland/Reykjavik edition, but if you want a nicely written, photo-laden overview of this truly unforgettable country, check out Insight Guide: Iceland.

Helpful for broad overview of the country's history and culture, with lots of interesting (and bizarre) stories that entertained us on our drive around the Ring Road (like the nuns and priests that were sleeping with each other secretly?!), but the maps in this book were seriously lacking. Thankfully my traveling companion had the Bradt Iceland guide, which was more dry reading with less pictures, but contained excellent maps. The two books together were about all we needed!

This book came from the library with a QR code that meant I could download the content in a seperate app. I loved being able to toggle between the insight guide app and a different guide book on my kindle. The culture and history sections were perfect- giving just enough depth to really flesh out a new to me country without being overwhelming.

Great book. Used it while traveling in Iceland. Good detail.

This may be listed with guidebooks to Iceland, but it's isn't, really. Rather than a useful guide to the best tourist sites or restaurants, this is a book to give you a greater depth of understanding for your visit. It is packed - PACKED! - with history, geography, and natural history. The photos are lovely, of course, and the text generally well-written. If you're a casual tourist going to Reykjavik or seeing the golden circle, you may not be interested in this. But for a much greater depth of background than any of the normal guidebooks will give you, this is highly recommended. (so I suppose my advice to travelers is this: get this book and, say, the Lonely Planet guidebook).

I really enjoyed reading this travel guide, the narrative is interesting and peppered with interesting factoids. Travel guides can be rather dry, but this one was not at all. I also liked the color pictures scattered throughout, some full page. I liked the layout, opening with the top attractions and the inclusion of the history and detailed geography. I felt as I read it like I was having a conversation with someone who had been there and was excited to share their knowledge. I do agree with another reviewer who wanted to see more detailed maps, but that's all I would change. When we are finally ready to go, this one will be coming with!

Really helped me to plan my holiday to Iceland. Plus I also learned about the history of Iceland, some of the best restaurants, B&B's/hotels.

Not the best actual guidebook, but a good read about Iceland in general. I so want to go there.

A thorough review of Icelandic history, culture, geology, environment and wildlife. A must-read before, during, and after traveling. This guide was the best guide of its kind offered.
