Some things are worth fighting for. Of all his friends, Ivan is the only one looking forward to war. That's because Ivan has never backed down from a fight--especially when it comes to fighting for what's right. He has protected his friends from bullies for years. And now, as war erupts in Vietnam, Ivan wants nothing more than to fight for his country, just as his father did Some things are worth fighting for. Of all his friends, Ivan is the only one looking forward to war. That's because Ivan has never backed down from a fight--especially when it comes to fighting for what's right. Enlisting in the United States Army, Ivan is trained to be a sniper. And he's good at it. Very good. But Vietnam is not the war he was expecting. Somehow the glory and heroism of his father's war stories do not come so easily in the jungle. Ivan and his friends make a pack that if one of them gets called up to Vietnam they will all enlist. A four part series, each detailing the experience of one of the teens. Even though it is about war it is not overtly violent. Can be read as a stand alone in the series. Morris- Navy Ivan- Army Rudi- Marines Beck- Air Force Ivan is a Catholic Native American

After finishing the social studies, I want to check out some Vietnam War books. After finishing I Pledge Allegiance by Chris Lynch, I decided that I should check out the next book. It is crazy that the writer did Ivan as the narrator/main character of the book. It is the perfect book if you want to know about the brutality of the Vietnam War as well as the environment and how the army runs. But when you are reading this book, you need to be prepared for a sudden lost. In many books, they might have maybe one or two casualties at the end of the book, but it is different here. Since it is a war, it will end differently. After having Morris as the main character, the main character now is Ivan. He works in the army of the U.S. His dad has obtained a rank of a Captain in the army during the WWII and fought alongside Lieutenant general (3 Star General at that time) George S. Patton. Will he be able to survive like his dad, or maybe not…

Great book about the Vietnam War from a sniper's perspective. I loved the part when Chris Lynch talked about how substantially important the sniper's role in the war is. SWBST: Ivan is a trigger-happy college grad whose father fought in WW2. He wants to join the army like his father before him, but he ends up in the Navy, which he really hates. So he impresses his officers with his shooting skills and meets new friends along the way, which gets him promoted to a sniper. I would very highly recommend it this is a very great book. This is a book is about Ivan the main character of the story joining the Vietnam war but he's not the only one him and his friends join because Rudi gets picked to join but what happens to Ivan during the war and the people who he meets is what really is what got me going and the story that a character told about his first time killing someone really spooked me but its a war. I loved this book and would very highly recommend it.

I liked how Ivan was one of his friends who wanted to go to Vietnam, and how happy he was when he found out he was going. Later on he got the opportunity to join a marksmen academy and passed. Shortly after he became a sharpshooter, he went on a small operation with the LRRP. Recommendation I would recommend this to anyone interested in good Vietnam books. I would not recommend this for anyone under the age of ten because it can be graphic about the death. This is a good book for anyone who likes the thought of jungle warfare also.

Chris Lynch has written a series of five books for young adults about the war in Vietnam from the point of view of each of four friends who live in Boston, Massachusetts. Sharpshooter is a work of youth fiction showing how each of the four friends feels and acts during their days in Vietnam. Each of them joins a different branch of the military. This particular book, Sharpshooter, is from the point of view of Ivan who is from a militaristic family. Ivan is gung ho about joining the Army and going to war. Before the four friends leave, Ivan is worried about one of his friends, Rudi, who was seriously contemplating defecting to Canada to escape going to war, but in the end he doesn’t. Rudi joins the Marines! Two of the other boys, Morris and Beck, join the Navy and Air Force, respectively. Ivan really wants to be a sniper because he learned to shoot rifles at the age of five from his father! He really considers himself an excellent shot, but he finds out from his Lieutenant that he has a lot to learn about being a sharpshooter because he’s too noisy! Chris Lynch’s style of writing has both comic parts as well as very serious aspects of the main character’s thinking. Sometimes his portrayal of the characters in the story is “tongue-in-cheek” and can be quite funny. In this book the main character has a strange way of thinking. In my opinion, Chris Lynch has nailed the characterization and the reader can really have fun with this. This book, as well as Vietnam Book One I Pledge Allegiance, has humor and action at the same time and will keep a reader’s interest all the time. Each book also introduces jargon to the reader used in the different branches of the military. Both books have made me look forward to reading Book Three and Four in the near future.

Personal Response My personal response to this book is that it gets you thinking. The reason I say that is because the author put you in the book and gives you an idea what it would be like to be in the army and gets you thinking like what if your were in war, what would be the reason you're fighting in the war.The book always gets you thinking of what will happen in the next chapter and what will happen to the author . Plot Summary This book is about the author and his 4 four friends that are getting drafted to go and fight in Vietnam War.The author shows no sign of being scared he is just ready to go and protect his country. The other reason is because his dad and grandpa were already in the army and all he wants to do is be better or be the same as they were when they were in the army. The author is focused on all the instruction and does not mess around because he has a mission to regroup with his friend because the didn't get to be in the same squad/unit they got separated. The author is getting promoted too because of all of the hard work that he has done. Recommendation I would have to recommend this book to people that like action and that want to know about the arm forces. The book is would great for middle schoolers because their aren't a lot of hard words and if they are you can figure them out by just reading on. If you like great cliff hanger then it would also be the great book for you.

In I Pledge Allegiance, we meet four friends growing up at the height of the Vietnam conflict. Rudi is the first to get a draft notice, and is visibly upset. Morris is resigned to going, Beck wants to keep his hair long until the very last minute, but Ivan is gung-ho. Sent on a ship to Vietnam, Ivan is trained to be a sniper, and tries to do the best that he can, while most of the other men are just counting the days until they return home. The more experience Ivan has with war, the less enchanted with it he becomes. After he kills his first man, for example, he gets a tattoo, but on the inside of his bicep instead of somewhere showier. Eventually, the horror of the war catches up even with Ivan, and he, too, starts to count down the days. Strengths: The details in this short book are relevant and fantastic. From pop tabs that come off cans (am I the only one who really misses those), to details of the fighting, Lynch does an excellent job of making one feel there. In the first book, I was concerned at how was was almost glorified; it is not in this book. This series is a must have for middle school libraries.

The second novel in the four part series follows Ivan through his induction into the Army, along with his partial tour in Vietnam. The novels are able to connect through the letters the characters send to each other. Letters received and sent are printed into the text of the novel, keeping the characters which are not the focus of the novel in the mind's eye of the reader. Presenting the various personalities from the characters through their writing is another way the writer connects the characters to the reader. Although the reader has yet to hear the story directly from Rudi, Mr. Lynch creates a feel, and a large amount of sympathy, for the young man. The shift in voice between the first and second stories helps add to the personalities of the characters within the stories.

This book was in a pack of five. I picked this one up first because of the awesome sniper graphic. I didn't expect it to be that good, coming from scholastic and all, but it actually was quite ok. I wish it had more fighting going on, because it was more of a drama than anything. I can't imagine what it would be like to have go-army parents that expect their children to join as soon as they can. When I really think about it, I ask myself: Why do we fight? why did we send 536,100 soldiers into a country to fight a war that wasn't ours? I believe we did this because of our patriotic hearts in America that we strive to help others. I hope that by reading the other books, I can learn more about the abundant Vietnam War.

The book was very detailed in the battles and fight scenes. It almost felt as if I were right beside Rudi. My favorite part was when Rudi bayoneted his first Vietnamese soldier. It went into very deep detail on how he felt sorry for the guy. In this book I learned more about the violence and the different conditions for the soldiers. So far all of them have had each other's back. For example, In the first book, it was Morris in the navy so he could watch over his friends from the sea to make sure they come home. In this book, Ivan is the one who is watching over. He becomes a sharpshooter to watch over his fellow soldier and most importantly watch over his friends. All in all, I like the book it was pretty good in my opinion. It had an ending a lot better than the first book ending. The first book was similar to the first one it kind of revolves around how they make sure to watch over each other to make sure they make it home. In the first book, Morris was watching over them now its Ivan.

His dad is a WWII hero and has grown up always thinking and wanting to join the military. His grandfather was also a war hero during the awful time of WWI. The book at the beginning takes place in boston massachusetts. This is where you learn how they grew up how they became friends and how they grew up together and became friends. Then the war in vietnam calls them all to action. This was a good book. The book told a great story and really went into depth of on what our character was thinking and what he was seeing. It shared his emotions and actions with descriptive words. The author was very specific. The story of the book was amazing. It told an amazing story of the four best friends terrified to go to war all besides ivan. Very very good book. Someone might want to read this book and or the series if you want to learn how the soldiers felt about the war. You might also read it if you want a book with action. Although this book did not have as many action scenes as some of the other books in the series. It still had some really good descriptive battle scenes. Ivan went into vietnam hoping he would have the experience of a lifetime in the war and to serve his country like how his dad and grandfather did. But in the end, he thinks war is an awful place.
