For somebody who did not grow up in the United States, the Civil War was a topic that I learned about by gleaning from popular culture, conversations, occasional contextual references, etc. For a long time, I assumed that the war was really about the opposing sides of the morality of slavery. I could not have picked this book from a better location. It was in that little store inside the Lincoln Memorial in DC. I happened to read it however, when I was reading Bhu Srinivasan's Americana in which For somebody who did not grow up in the United States, the Civil War was a topic that I learned about by gleaning from popular culture, conversations, occasional contextual references, etc. For a long time, I assumed that the war was really about the opposing sides of the morality of slavery. I could not have picked this book from a better location. It was in that little store inside the Lincoln Memorial in DC. I happened to read it however, when I was reading Bhu Srinivasan's Americana in which he talks about how Slavery and the War along with a host of other ideas and elements to weave together a story of American capitalism. The chapter on slavery really intrigued me and I decided to start reading Leidner's compilation. It's a short compilation of quotes from important members of the war. There is hardly any detail on any battles, strategies and so on. Instead, it tells the story of the war through different personalities' quotes through the 4 years of the war. And boy does it do a fantastic job. There's always some write-up leading into different chapters of quotes that helps set context and Leidner does it well. Some of the pictures he paints are fantastic. My personal favorite is Robert E. Lee for reasons that I don't want to get into here. The one big takeaway from this book for me is this - the civil war wasn't as popularly thought today a war between opposing opinions on the morality of slavery. There were too many things that played a part.
