I’d love to give this a higher rating as the only bio about one of my favorite singers, and I do recommend that fans of hers read it, but it just has too many issues. It’s hinted in the acknowledgments that English isn’t the author’s first language, and it shows periodically throughout the book. Also some annoying misspellings that should have been caught. As far as the content, I give the author great credit for reconstructing Thornton’s childhood and youth, but once her career starts the book becomes more and more of a tour itinerary than a biography. There’s practically nothing about Willie Mae’s personal life. I know there may be nobody alive who could talk about it, but it was disappointing. The quotes and anecdotes from other musicians paint a fun picture of her sweet but fiery personality though.
