Magic Boy's hypochondria gets the best of him in Kochalka's most ambitious graphic novel yet. A chance meeting with an action-painting robot forces Magic Boy to contemplate the meaning of art and his own technophobia. Heady stuff leavened with Kochalka's usual bratty humor and thick brushstrokes. Now I enjoy this one! Maybe if I reread Fantastic Butterflies, I will enjoy it as well now that I'm getting familiar with Mr. Kochalka's style. Thank God Jason X12 didn't appear in this book, although it was mentioned. It was such a gloomy robot dog :D. Gark's new robot was much more fun! Oh and there was also a party in this book. I'm sure Mr. Kochalka loves to party. Now I enjoy this one! Maybe if I reread Fantastic Butterflies, I will enjoy it as well now that I'm getting familiar with Mr. Kochalka's style. The quintessential Kochalka. Mixes autobiography and fantasy in an alarmingly unique fashion. Great balance of the mundane and the absurd; a nice combination of poetic moments and bizaare distractions.

Just like the rest of Kochalka's work, this book is whimsically sweet and simple. I prefer the American Elf diaries because they're more true-to-life -- no clingy robots or interludes of floating in space -- but this book is predictably wholesome.
