I have mixed feelings about this book. I cared about Angel and Mercy and the action kept me going. But I felt like things worked out really nicely for them when the reality for the children who went through what they did was horrific. It also felt a little artificial that the Canadians in the story were all so nice when most of the other adults were terrible. But I'm sure I'll read the next book about them.

I too have seen the horrors of war, but never thought of it from the perspective of the people I was fighting as John W. Egan has demonstrated. "The Enemy" are people too; people with dreams, hopes, and aspirations beyond the death and destruction we credit them with, while we ourselves inflict the same carnage. It never occurred to me that the people I was fighting might be doing it for reasons other than to fight: they were "the enemy." Really the enemy is ignorance, and this book sheds light I too have seen the horrors of war, but never thought of it from the perspective of the people I was fighting as John W. It never occurred to me that the people I was fighting might be doing it for reasons other than to fight: they were "the enemy." Really the enemy is ignorance, and this book sheds light on what it means to be on the wrong side of a war. It seems there is no wrong side to a battle if the motivations of the fighters are for higher ideals beyond survival: love, courage, family. This book embraces everything I never thought about when I was a soldier; I should have thought about it, but didn't. Reading this book will help you realize that when we decide to fight a war or battle of any sort, we frequently become what we fight against. This book is dark and disturbing at times, but also truthful and enlightening if you are open to the experience.
