When faced with the opportunity to change shifts while staying in the same house, veteran firefighter Derek Gilman jumps at the chance. His new schedule means not working Saturdays, which means more time to spend with his two kids. His divorce may have been amicable, but being a firefighter and a single dad is a lot to juggle. And when fate brings a gorgeous, wealthy woman When faced with the opportunity to change shifts while staying in the same house, veteran firefighter Derek Gilman jumps at the chance. His new schedule means not working Saturdays, which means more time to spend with his two kids. His divorce may have been amicable, but being a firefighter and a single dad is a lot to juggle. And when fate brings a gorgeous, wealthy woman into his life, he’s pretty sure he can’t handle more than he already is. Olivia McGovern loves plans. She planned to start her own business and planned its growth. It’s earning her seven figures now, but her personal life simply doesn’t exist. Getting trapped in a broken elevator figures in exactly nowhere, and freaking out in front of a sexy firefighter definitely isn’t on the agenda. Especially not one with two kids and an ex. What would have been a random incident with an attractive stranger becomes something more when a charity event brings them back together. They’re from different sides of the tracks, literally—with friends, family and careers to consider. But as Derek and Olivia are discovering, chemistry doesn’t allow for plans, and love doesn’t bother with logistics.

They’d checked each other out right before entering and their attraction was undeniable. They went their separate ways following rescue but days later had an unplanned reunion at a charity meeting. This time they wasted no time in moving forward after having failed to exchange contact information the first time. So what could go wrong? Olivia’s highly successful and her lifestyle is proof of that. Derek is divorced with two young children and lives modestly. Even though there’s an obvious income disparity, these two have a lot of interests in common and genuinely like and enjoy each other. I liked how Olivia didn’t shy away from the issue, embracing her accomplishments without diminishing Derek and he didn’t fall into that trap of believing his manhood was threatened. They confronted the real issues a single father faces in co-parenting and introducing a new relationship to his children, as well as those fears and concerns a woman would experience walking into the situation. It was refreshing to not see manufactured drama, just the small things that can place strain on a new and developing relationship, figuring out how to communicate and handle them. I thoroughly enjoyed this story about two people from different socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds (she was from Virginia, he from Boston) who focused on what really matters in a relationship but weren’t unrealistically oblivious to the differences. While both were appealing, they weren’t perfect, had some missteps and behaved maturely and honestly. The narrator seemed to capture their personalities really well and delivered a strong performance. This is one of my favorites in the series. And when Derek meets Olivia, his kid’s feelings naturally factor, but not before he and Olivia really get to know one another. There’s nothing sexier than a woman with a plan.” Of all the books so far, this is the one which resonated hugely with me as I once walked a very similar path to Olivia—a single woman in a corporate world who fell in love with a divorced dad with two kids. And myself and my hubby followed a path almost identical to Olivia and Derek in how I became involved in their lives, so as far as I’m concerned Shannon Stacey has done a superb job in bringing that element of real to her romance, with a natural feel to how things unfold. She’d found the man she’d share a water bottle with.” With likeable characters, the right balance of romance and passion, and conflict on the lesser end of the drama scale, Under Control does lacks the firefighting action of its predecessors, but is another engaging, enjoyable addition to the Boston Fire series and with a lead in to Grant and Wren’s story, I’m looking forward to Flare Up. Some readers love firefighter romances. Alas, I am not one of those readers. Sure, I see the appeal. Firefighters are prepared to sacrifice everything to save lives, and the men in this profession are stereotypically viewed as rugged and super sexy and somehow always single. Although I haven't historically been a fan of Shannon Stacey's Boston Fire series (only because of the firefighter theme), I adore her storytelling and will read everything she writes. I am happy to say, this time my loyalty paid off. I very much enjoyed this fifth installment. Under Control features a divorced hero, Derek, who has figured out this amicable relationship/co-parenting thing. The life he has built post-divorce works for him, and bringing someone new into this dynamic is foreign territory. Our heroine, Olivia, has never heard of a friendly divorce. Growing up in chaos, structure and her tidy schedule have always brought her comfort. Dating a firefighter is not tidy nor is it predictable or something that can be planned. Enter kids in the equation, and all bets are off. Two people with great chemistry but with no idea how to move forward makes for a sexy romance with enough conflict to keep it engaging. Under Control is a quick, fun, yet complicated romance that I thoroughly enjoyed. Another Shannon Stacey winner. Check it out! My favorite quote: “And while sometimes an anchor could feel like it was dragging you down, it was really the thing that kept you from being adrift at sea.”

I have had this series on my radar since it got started and have even collected a couple of the installments but have never had the chance to pick one up. I am so glad that I finally jumped into the series. I am happy to report that this book works perfect fine as a stand alone despite being the fifth book in the Boston Fire series. I had a lot of fun with this really well done novel. I found that this book felt really authentic. I can't think of single thing that happens in this story that didn't feel like it could happen in the real world. I loved the fact that Derek is divorced with kids that are the center of his universe. Since I was a divorced mother of a 4 year old child when I met my husband, I could completely relate to the way he was trying to find the right balance. I also loved the way that Derek and Olivia met. I was once stuck in an elevator and while I didn't have a firefighter there to rub my feet while we waited for rescue, I did have a whole crowd of firefighters gathered to rescue me so I could totally see their meeting happening. Derek and Olivia were both great characters. Derek is a firefighter and divorced father of two. He has a great relationship with his ex-wife which did seem to make everything a bit simpler. Olivia is a highly organized and driven business owner. Her life is scheduled down to the last detail and she likes it that way. This pair had some great chemistry and there were plenty of steamy moments. There really wasn't any manufactured drama in this one which their biggest obstacle being trying to figure out how to blend their very different lives with each other. I would recommend this book to others. I had a great time spending time with Derek and Olivia and my heart may have melted just a bit as they fell in love. I do want to read more from Shannon Stacey very soon and will probably start with the earlier books in the series. I received a digital review copy of this book from Carina Press via NetGalley. Initial Thoughts I really enjoyed this book. I think one of the things that I liked the best about the story is the fact that the characters felt very real and the issues that the had to work through were ones that I could easily relate to myself. Derek and Olivia were great together and I loved how his kids were a big part of the story.

Olivia is single, successful and devoted to her business and her (seemingly inflexible) five-year plan. She is also busy staying on top of everything she has to juggle. “They lived two very different kinds of lives…” They make seem like opposites on the surface, but dig a little and it is clear that Derek and Olivia have a lot in common. Their outlook on career and life mesh really well, if only their calendars would do the same! They lust after each other, sure, but their relationship also has respect, fun and a healthy fear. Fear of letting family, co-workers, clients – and themselves – down… Something has to give and it all leads to tough conversations and a climax that will make or break them. New characters to embrace and already loved ones meant this return to Boston Fire was a warm hug read. I hope there are more in this series! ~Diane, 4 stars

The romance itself was kind of underwhelming (it was fine, I was just in no way passionate about it), BUT THE FUNCTIONAL CO-PARENTING AND THE NEGOTIATING BOUNDARIES AND RELATIONSHIPS AND COMPROMISE. THAT was dreamy.

She writes books, she lectures and she helps people and companies one-to-one to improve productivity. Her entire life is mapped out and meticulously planned. When she gets stuck in an elevator with a sexy firefighter and has a panic attack he manages to talk her through her anxiety and massages her twisted ankle in a way that leaves her more than a little flustered. Derek and Olivia make no plans to meet, they don't exchange numbers, but fate crosses their paths once again when Olivia gets involved with organising an event for a charity which is close to Derek's heart. But can physical attraction overcome the disparity in their lives and incomes? Of all the books in the Boston Fire series that I've read I think this one had the least plot surrounding actual fire-fighting and the fire house. Although I liked this book I didn't warm to Derek and Olivia in the same way as I did Gavin and Cait (Hot Response) or Jamie and Scott (Fully Ignited). Derek was too hung up on the differences in their wealth and homes and seemed to think that because Olivia didn't have children she resented helping out with his children. Olivia on the other hand is living with the fallout from her parents' acrimonious divorce which still requires her to listen to recriminations and dramatics, no wonder she loved to Boston to get away from it. Can she trust a divorced man with children? And how will the uncertainties of a firefighter's work patterns and children fit into her uber-planned life? Overall I felt that the book needed some outside tension rather than the one-note angst about the difference in their lifestyles - that felt too much like navel-gazing at times. Is the next book going to explain what happened with Grant and Wren? I received a free copy of this book from the publisher via NetGalley in return for an honest review. Bumped for release.

I was happy to find them available on audio at the library.  I've really enjoyed all the couples. The characters are likeable, relatively normal, believable people so I can relate to them.  Of course, there is the added benefit of knowing the others in the circle of friends as the stories continue. Olivia and Derek are both lovely people with good hearts and a few quirks. Their meeting was cute and they are attracted so they start to spend some time together to get to know each other. But quickly, they are having sex. I didn't feel the attraction with so little time with dialogue so the sex felt too fast. Even though they were honest with each other, the first half of the book felt like too much sex, not enough relationship development. I think this might be because we are told they talk on the phone almost every night but we don't get many of those conversations where they forge more of their connection. But then they started to want a more long-term relationship and they started working on their differences and issues. Other friends and family were introduced to their couple-ness. So the second half of the book was great and I really enjoyed it as they grew to adjust their lives together. The next book Flare Up was set up near the end of Under Control and it sounds awesome.  I can't wait for it to release in January. Narration: I have listened on audio to the series and so I am comfortable with the narrator. I am able to use my normal 1.25x speed.  The male voices are fine except they all seem to have a heavy Boston accent.  Most of the women don't seem to have it.  It's a little odd.  But the performance is the world I know and enjoy. Past their first tension-filled encounter in a stalled elevator however, things past their second meeting fell into a bit of a lull for me despite their paths crossing repeatedly via mutual friends (the details of Olivia’s corporate career and the charity they were involved in didn’t interest me that much) as I impatiently waited for things to heat up between Olivia and Derek. And heat up they do, though gently and without any (unpleasant) surprises, even if I’d hoped for a bit more first-responder action. The pluses here however, do outweigh the lull for me: the progressive, natural attraction between them, no clichéd evil ex running interference, no excessive denial of attraction or feelings; everyone generally behaves like the adults they are, working towards a happy home—all refreshing to read. Olivia’s fear of compromising her career plans with a relationship is her biggest worry; the fear of Olivia fitting into his domestic life is Derek’s, though the general lack of angst makes ‘Under Control’ an easy read without the overt strife that can sometimes accompany blended-family-type stories. *ARC by the publisher via Netgalley

This was clearly a case of opposites attract, but Olivia was a little too stuck up and unreachable for my tastes. She came off as a haughty rich snob to me, and I could understand Derek's feelings on the situation. That being said, Derek wasn't easy to connect with either. He was too aloof, and made too much out of the fact that Olivia made more money than he did. He came across as shallow, and that made me dislike him a bit. The plot really didn't hold my attention, as evidenced by how long it took me to read the story. All things considered, I doubt I will continue with the series or author.

Under Control is another great addition to Shannon Stacey’s Boston Fire series about the men of Ladder 37 and Engine 59. This story is about firefighter Derek Gilman. Just moments after the doors close, the elevator stops and Derek finds himself stuck with beautiful Olivia McGovern. But once they are rescued, Olivia scurries off to a meeting, and later they both regret not getting more than a first name of the person they were stuck with on the elevator. A week later, Derek is attending a meeting for a non-profit organization he volunteers with, and as luck would have it, Olivia’s company has been brought on to help with the upcoming fundraising event. Under the guise of working on foundation business, Derek secures a dinner date with Olivia. And the rest, as they say, is history. There are so many things I’ve loved about this series, and about this book. I love that these people have relationships that begin organically. No insta-love, no jumping into bed right away. These people actually develop a friendship before becoming romantic. Derek and Olivia aren’t coy or ambiguous about their feelings. They have a mature relationship. But that doesn’t mean they don’t have obstacles to work through. Derek is divorced with two children, which is always a situation that has to be dealt with using sensitivity. However, I appreciated that the author didn’t go the usual route, with a messy divorce and vilifying the ex-wife. The crux of Derek and Olivia’s issues dealt with whether or not they could make the compromises necessary to blend two lives that were working fairly well on their own, and answering the question “is love worth making sacrifices.” This whole series has been really good. The writing is excellent, and I’ve loved the characters. The heroines are strong and smart, and the heroes are kind and manly - without that over-the-top ridiculous, alpha male behavior you’d expect from a series about firefighters. And when the author could use the cliched, overused storylines, she never does and it’s so refreshing. While the stories do sort of build on each other, they could be read out of order - you’re given just enough background information on each of the previous couples to sort of know “what their deal is” but nothing that would ruin their stories if you go back to read them (these are romances, after all, so I don’t think anyone will be surprised when the couples end up together!). I have thoroughly enjoyed all five of the Boston Fire books, and am anxiously awaiting book six! * thank you to NetGalley and HARLEQUIN - Carina Press for providing an ARC in exchange for an honest review

She’s started her own highly successful business and lives in the nicer end of town. She isn’t rigid, and doesn’t freeze up if there are changes, but instead she deals with changes by planning more. On the other hand, Derek, firefighter and divorced father of two young kids, knows life is messy and plans are fluid. He is working class, and lives near his kids and the firehouse. He’s convinced that Olivia is “out of his league.” I really like how Under Control plays out. It’s an HEA-romance that feels gritty and real without being overly dramatic. There is attraction followed by action between the pair, and then once they realize how good they are together, they individually consider how their lives will change if things keep moving forward. Derek spends a lot of time contemplating what a future together would look like and what it means to his world. Normally I don’t care for the “what ifs,” as the characters play out scenarios in their heads rather than being decisive and taking action. But the fears and concerns that play out in Derek’s mind are genuine, and they add value to the story. Derek doesn’t know what will happen so he questions the paths his future may take. Spending time together, the pair fall in love, and they truly want to make things work. The problem is each has only considered their own perspective on a future together. So when Derek and Olivia finally talk about their future - it’s painful because they both go into thinking it has to be a certain way. The conflict is emotional and genuine, leaving everyone involved, including myself, heartbroken. But this is a romance… so don’t worry too much! Under Control is a sweet romance, filled with sexy times and authentic emotions. Falling for one another after an immediate attraction, Olivia and Derek go the distance to make it work, and I enjoyed following them on their journey.

They need to decide if they want to try for anything with all the differences in their worlds or just let each other go. I loved these characters. I felt I could connect with the characters and the story was a great read. I recommend this book.

I enjoy this one quite a bit. The couple really needed to talk more, but I liked how they eventually worked it all out. I listened to the audio and it was ok. Tatiana Sokolov was the narrator.

Under Control was a relatively smooth read, but I had a few hang ups. Maybe it was because they had more conversation on the page rather then me being told Olivia and Derek talked every day but not necessarily about what. My favorite bits was Derek’s love for his kids. That was a huge highlight and I appreciated Olivia letting go of her worries and warming up to the idea of being in their lives on a permanent basis. Overall, this was a cute read from the library.

I received a free copy of this book to read and review for Wicked Reads, so here is my review. What happens when a sexy firefighter and a sexy self-made businesswoman gets stuck in an elevator together? The firefighter is calm and calls for help while the woman starts to panic because she is going to be late for her next appointment. And her business is teaching people how to make their work life more efficient and it wouldn't look good for her to be late. And her business is teaching people how to make their work life more efficient and it wouldn't look good for her to be late. Derek Gilman loves being a fireman and changing shifts so he can have Saturdays off to be able to spend more time with his kids makes his life almost perfect. Being stuck in the elevator with the sexy businesswoman makes him want to spend more time with her. But his fireman buddies are quick to rescue them and she is walking away quickly, almost running away. He can't believe he didn't get her number. Olivia McGovern is a planner, it is her business. From the time she gets up and until she goes to sleep, her day is all planned out. So getting stuck in an elevator was not part of her plan. And neither was meeting the sexy fireman named Derek. Oh well, he can star in her dreams because she will not see him again, he isn't in her plans. She never thought she would find Derek at a charity she has offered to help out. Her planning expertise will get the charity on track and get them the best money and sponsors. Can Olivia give up her planning and let Derek in to her life? What happens when she learns he is divorced and has two kids? Can Derek make room for Olivia without feeling like he isn't good enough for her? This is the first I have read in this series and I really enjoyed it. I would have liked to have more from his firehouse family but I guess I would have that from reading the rest of the series. This couple has enough heat to set off a 3-alarm fire and their love is what will either make them or break them. So if you are in to hot fireman and strong woman, them you need to read this one. And yeah, start from the beginning, I should have.

Olivia McGovern plan everything to the last detail. So being stuck in a an elevator certainly wasn't on her agenda. At least she was lucky enough to be stranded with a sexy firefighter who probably prevented her from a panic attack. Divorced and a dad of two little kids, Derek Gilman also have a busy life. But he wouldn't mind dating the woman he met in an elevator. Too bad she was late for a meeting and he didn't have a chance to ask for her number. What a great coincidence, she's there to help Olivia McGovern plan everything to the last detail. So being stuck in a an elevator certainly wasn't on her agenda. What a great coincidence, she's there to help the charity organisation he's part of. Career focus, Olivia doesn't have the time for a boyfriend right now. It's not part of the plan and she doesn't even want one for now. But there's an instant connection between her and Derek that she can't explain and certainly can't deny. The trouble is, they don't have the same lifestyle and it can be tricky coordinating their schedule. So here's the thing : I appreciate the fact that Shannon Stacey wrote a book about real life people with real life dreams and responsibilities. But at the same time, it felt a little flat for me. It's probably because while I liked both the MC, their chemistry, to me, was lukewarm. But I really liked how the hero always put his children first and how the kids were an important part of the book. An other case of it's not you, it's me. Sad when it happens, but that's life ;p

There is a lot to like about the 5th book in Boston Fire and it can definitely be read as a stand alone. Olivia’s is highly successful women and I love that she didn't downplay that and yet still made Derek feel like he was diminished in any way. I also loved that Derek didn't feel like his masculinity was threatened as happens all to often in books with successful women. There is obviously an income disparity and Derek was a single father which comes with issues of its own. I enjoyed both Olivia and Derek and while neither was perfect they were very likable. In fact this is one of my favorite books in this series. A copy of this book was provided to me by Net Galley and the publisher with no requirements for a review. I voluntarily read this book and my comments here are my honest opinion

#5 in the Boston Fire romance series Thanks to NetGalley for a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review As with the previous books in this series, Stacey has created a warm and exciting world surrounding the firefighters in a Boston fire station. I love Derek and his strong love for his family, both his kids and his firefighting guys. He even has a friendly relationship with his ex-wife and her new husband. He doesn't have a lot of money, but he gets by and is happy with his lifestyle. Olivia, from the other end of the financial spectrum, is professional and successful, and she has a firm plan for her life--and sexy firefighters definitely don't fit. So they have some basic issues to overcome, but the book doesn't spend the entire time with drama and over-the-top problems. Mostly it's about adjusting and compromising to work out a plan that will allow them to happily be together. Both characters were appealing and vulnerable, and I was definitely rooting for their success. It was also great to revisit with the Boston Fire "family" from previous books. I look forward to the next in this excellent series.

My heart broke for him. I'm so looking forward for the angst in his and Wren's book. E-ARC is received thanks to the publisher via Netgalley.

I love Shannon Stacey's characters. They have a lot of heart. I always think she writes well but I think in this one there are her more complex and more complete characters. I think her writing was more refined because of it. It starts with a dedication for every people who takes time to help each other. I really like the story of Derek and Olivia. That's a really good series by Shannon Stacey and I hope Grant's book in 2019 won't be the last.
