Although the plot sounds grim and these people are facing the apocalypse, I liked the sound of it and was keen to read it. Basically, the government has had warning of an asteroid on collision course with Earth and against all expert advice tried to nuke it to change path. Instead it breaks into pieces and causes deadly earthquakes, and this one in Las Vegas traps survivors in the Luxor Hotel, trying to get off the upper floors and escape from the lift after the quake hits. The actual story of the quake, the coming asteroid that people know nothing of and the attempt to escape the hotel itself were fine. The trouble is there was way too much focus on the angst between the characters rather than the issues they face climbing down all the balconies. We are told most of that rather than being shown, instead getting more of the fighting which got a bit dull. Felicity is an escort who decides to slip into the hotel and not pay taxi driver Aamir the fare she owes yet she is annoyed about him following her and ruining her day! Bitch, you owe the man over $60 and he is entitled to chase you up for trying to run off without paying! Zeke is the drugged up, heavy drinking magician whose shows have been poor enough to get him fired and replaced by a new talent. But of course Zeke thinks it was everyone else's fault and won't admit he was wrong or deserved it. Then he gets his stuff nicked by thief Dexter and is fighting with him when the quake hits. They spend the following chapters with Zeke being a diva and Dexter threatening him with a knife every time he gets annoyed. Then there is the racist obnoxious businessman Ben who owes money to loan sharks and is also stealing from the casino as they try to escape. The way he behaves to Aamir gets on my nerves, and Aamir is the only half decent character in the book. I can't be bothered with the rest and I lost interest in the book before I was halfway through. Disappointing that moronic characters fighting overtook the interesting events of the book.

Fun, quick read Enjoyed the variety of the characters and how they worked through their differences. If we ever have to face this situation for real, I hope more thought goes into who is selected to survive. Politicians and foreign leaders wouldn't be the best choices for repopulating the world. It is still a good story and an entertaining read.

An exciting ride... Bit of a spoiler here, but one of the things I liked best about this book was that there was no sudden last minute reprieve. It was happening, no matter what, and that was that. I thought the epilogue was perfect, too. I enjoyed the pacing of the book. It was consistent and moved appropriately from one arc to the next. The characters were flawed but likeable, and very realistic. I liked that they didn't wrestle overly much with their consciences. Too often, in this particular An exciting ride... Too often, in this particular genre, the characters spend half the book wrestling with having done what was necessary to survive. While I think some human beings would do that, I also think those are probably the ones who won't last long. Sometimes, you are almost certainly going to have to shoot to kill if the SHTF, because if you don't, you or your loved ones will die. That's reality, and if you're busy debating the morality of it, you're not going to be paying enough attention to your surroundings. That's a recipe for disaster. I look forward to reading more by this author. I like his writing style very much.

This is mainly a character-driven story. As with most apocalyptic fiction, it's highly speculative. However, it does not focus on doom as so many such stories do. It does present many challenges and much action to keep the reader riveted. Kevin Pierce delivers his customary outstanding performance. Pacing and voicing are spot on. NOTE: I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

This was a very nice and quick listen for me. I was grabbed right from the beginning and really enjoyed many parts of the story. The ragtag group of survivors that focusses around was very refreshing and I really liked each of their background stories. I like how the author did his character development with quick little flashbacks from each of their lives while not delving into too much with each character. This left more time for the storyline/apocalypse and how it would play out. I like the combination of disaster and one grand apocalyptic event that will take place in this story. The blend was refreshing and quite scary if possible. Of course, like many others in the genre are characters avoid death and disaster just in the nick of time so expect that throughout the story. One thing in particular that I did enjoy was the fact that this story took place in Las Vegas but then took a quick turn into some unfamiliar landscapes and the back roads of America. Meaning most apocalyptic tale take place in very large metropolitan areas or in the back roads of America. This displayed both quite nicely. If I’m being honest, I think the ending took me for a loop and was a little bit strange. I think judging by the time and length of this book I thought it would be more of a series. Perhaps it still will be but the ending of this book just felt rushed. As you read/listen you will come to realize what I mean as the timeframe from the ending of the book to the apologue is a five month span. I have listened to many books that were performed by Kevin peers as he did the narration for this one. And as always he does a pretty good job. I think my only complaint is there is an eastern Indian character, which I think would be a very difficult character to perform and keep consistent. At times the voice he used sounded more robotic then someone with an accent but all in all he did a very nice job with this title. He has a very particular voice and in other reviews I have called him the voice of the apocalypse and I still believe that. Don’t get me wrong he did an awesome job with this one. If you’re looking for a quick listen to get you through then I suggest trying this one. Overall this was a pretty good listening experience for me I found it very difficult to only give this four stars but with the rushed ending I think that took away from some of the intensity.

Pretty good story but not a whole lot of new ideas. The story is more character driven than most books like this and that is always good. It was nice to see people from such different backgrounds come together and bond. I’d be interested in a sequel but it would take place in space unless you jump forward in time. I always love books by Jack Hunt. Kevin Pierce did an amazing job as always. I could listen to him forever. It hits Earth and kills everything except those whom NASA has picked for a freedom space ship. This is an excellent read for the genre.....DEHS

I expected a little more.. This is about a diverse group of strangers banding together during a catastrophe. A very diverse group. A magician, a call girl, a thief, a cabbie, and a gambler wake trapped in a casino after it collapsed on top of them following a meteorite impact. And another very large asteroid is about to wipe out the human population of earth in 72 hours. Something just didn't ring true in this story. I don't know if this was a disaster book, or a book about working together, or what, but I think the characters didn't ever become believable for me. Some things they did and said seemed beyond reason, and maybe that's why I didn't care for this. I haven't read anything from this author previously, so I can't compare this to any of his other books. I won't say I wouldn't read anything else by this author, because this book may not be representative of his other work. Results: while I didn't particularly care for this book, it wasn't badly written. It wasn't filled with graphic sex, violence, or cursing. My opinion is just personal preference.

Very good read The characters are well written and interesting. The plot was well thought out and fun with some cool twists. There are lots of apocalyptic novels out there and I have read a lot of them, but this one was worth the read. I found a few errors the editor didn't catch. But this had a lot less than many. I guess I need to sign up to edit. Anyway I would be interested to hear more about the characters, but it had a good resolution and was satisfying. I guess only in Vegas would you get this diverse of a group of survivors. Unfortunately, I was not able to really care about any of them. They were all whiny and annoying, though it was interesting that they were able to work together. I also did not find it credible that the government could build a space station large enough to hold 100,000 people and it never surface to public awareness. A station that size would have been visible to amateur astronomers and anyone looking up as it passed over I guess only in Vegas would you get this diverse of a group of survivors. Enjoyed it I decided to try out this book since I had read others by this author. I am glad I did! It was well written and the characters all had their own secrets to put aside in order to survive. Ordinary people who were able to overcome their pasts during a disaster and strive to help each other survive. Very interesting plot and I recommend it.

A different look at a post apocalyptic tale While there are plenty of descriptive passages about the current and upcoming events that were to spell the end....the story focused a great deal on the interplay between strangers caught up together in trying to survive the unimaginable. An interesting read!

Not a bad romp Beside using one huge deus ex machina, it was an enjoyable read. The orbiting accommodations are never fully explained, but they are not important to the story. They sort of are, but it’s the voyage that counts. And planet earth has 7 billion people on it, not 7 million. :)

Feel good story about the worst day in human history Literally a roller coaster ride of the landscape between Las Vegas and Cape Canaveral. Magic acts and a turn of the cards lead these few out of steel and plaster graves. To salvation? Read on and find out for yourself the depths of desperation and soaring aspirational moments of just what average people must do to survive.

Not bad This wasn't the best, but also wasn't the worst post apocalyptic book. The characters were well done and interesting, but on more than one occasion I was pushed out of the story because of something a character did that just seemed to only be done to move the book in a certain direction...

Loved this book I absolutely loved this book. Just a group of ordinary people thrown together by extraordinary circumstances trying to survive. No insane heroics or sudden super powers, just doing the same that you or I would do to survive. Couldn't put the book down until it was finished. Would be Great to have a follow up.

A Good Read If I had read this book prior to reading another Post Apocalyptic book it would have received a rating of 5. There are editing issues, other than that it is a well written book that focuses on 5 individuals, each with their own unique issues, that either hinder or help them on their trek to safety.

It took to long to get exciting, but it eventually did. Before getting to the good part; the adventure. There were a lot of missing words, and a lot of missed spelled word. However, even with all of that; it was still a good read. I would have also liked to see Zeke live.

It was an excellent read this is the kind of book that has well developed characters. They had nothing in common and yet everything in common. I liked the personr Challenges each of them had and how they came together as a team. The sappy ending was great also .

Decent book. The characters were all pretty unlikable, and the whole 'Deliverance' part was COMPLETELY unbelievable, but it was a quick, action-packed read. Don't think I'll be reading any more from this author. I love disaster novels, but this just didn't do it for me.

An Original View of an Apocalypse Final Impact was an enjoyable read. The story was original and the ending unique. My only complaint is the proof reading which should have caught the grammatical errors and the misspellings. The action was good and the characters believable.

Not What You Expect! Very different from most apocalyptic books - the Heroes of the story were not prepared, or the cream of the crop. But they sure figured out how to survive.....well, not all of them.....

Not to bad Kind of different than I'm used to reading in a apocalypse book. I guess I just find it hard to comprehend living in space. I can how ever see the government doing this to the American people.
