The difference is Sheriff Maggie Doane has six deputized officers to patrol hundreds of square miles of remote Nevada mountains and deserts. After dodging a close attempt on her own life, finding the bad guy takes all her willpower and attention, despite the distraction of a sick father and intrusions of old boyfriends. When one of the richest men in the state snaps his fingers, how will she respond? These and other challenges await in "A Sheriff in Nevada." "Sheriff Maggie Doane is a workaholic, and the fact that she has to keep an eye on her willfully incompetent team of deputies doesn't help matters. Her best deputy is her partner, a dog named Max. The department is underfunded and understaffed, and promising new hire Cheryl "Charlie" Stone arrives just in time to help solve a brutal murder. Set away from the bright lights of Las Vegas and in the fictional rural area of Jefferson County, this story has some surprising twists and characters you'll want to keep following." While I won't give an "official" review of this book by J.T. Hume (full disclosure: we're married!), I will say this is an enjoyable story with great characters in an interesting little town. A good read for anyone who likes a touch of mystery and relationship drama with an edge of darkness.

Nice depictions of northern Nevada. A thoroughly enjoyable read.

Liked it! I'm not entirely sure what it was that caught my attention in an early draft of this book but I was instantly hooked by the story. I wanted to read more. More about this strong Sheriff out in the middle of nowhere, more about the independent folks who know what community is all about, more about what makes this place tick. Definitely glad I could spend more time in this story and following along with Maggie as she works to discover what's going on in her small town all the while trying Liked it! A spitfire sheriff, a fantastic read. Wasn't sure about this one, but I'm sure glad I got it. Maggie is not afraid to work and run her department. So much about this one to enjoy. Hope to see a book two soon.

Maggie Doane is the overworked Sheriff of a small town in the middle-of-nowhere Nevada and the dead bodies are piling up. Lots of local color, vivid characters, and friction here, against a backdrop of brothels, casinos, ranches, and a military base that’s hiding something. JT Hume has us empathizing with his flawed, struggling characters. A good story, well-told.
