I think I was just as shocked as everyone else when Lil Nas X decided to come out with a picture book. But...it was really good! Thank you so much to Random House Kids for sending me a copy for review. All thoughts are my own. C Is for Country is a fun and interesting concept book that focuses on the alphabet. As a librarian and a parent, I'm used to seeing the "typical" words used in alphabet concept books, but I can admit that the words utilized for each of the letters were fun and different. There was a focus on what Lil Nas X liked to do as well as a focus on family and I appreciated that. The artwork was good. I think that a lot picture books are moving towards more graphic designed artwork. The colors were vibrant and rich and it was cute seeing Lil Nas X characterized as a little kid. Clearly this is a play on his song "Old Town Road" which kids absolutely loved upon released. As a result, I think that they'll really appreciate and enjoy this book.

My child is obsessed with horses and can’t stop reading this book. It’s so good. The “Y is for y’all” page is the best.

The gentleman knows how to write a hook with crossover appeal. Arguably not the most important qualities in a children's picture book in general, but important if you're selling an ABC about a contemporary Black country family with horses. Hella charming. So wholesome. He wrote it for his nieces and nephews. Well, ok, you expect that from a guy who wanted to work with Billy Ray Cyrus because of Hannah Montana. Taylor's art is just as appealing as the text. Those adorable outfits are all based on actual red-carpet wear. The pony, Panini! Library copy

C Is for Country by @lilnasx was a cute ABC picture book that my youngest daughter loved listening too. He brought elements of the country in with his cute rhymes and it was reminiscent of his pride in being a country boy. The illustrations were fun and colorful and grabbed the kids attention immediately. My kids kept singing his song “Old Town Road” and when I found out he came out with this book, I had to let them read along. Absolutely adorable, I'd love to read this to little kids. The text is sweet and the pictures are super cute. I love that there's a stuffed version of Panini in each drawing, too, it was a nice little touch that I think makes it that much easier for kids who don't live in rural spaces to find something in common with it. A horse named Panini! Stuffed animals at bedtime that are being extra! "F" is for the fringe on a western wear jacket! This alphabet book is imbued with the author's persona and it's quite a niche but I'm not sure I want to bring this book home to my child and risk being asked to play Old Town Road again after it was requested SIX THOUSAND TIMES in the summer of 2019. Ugh. It's stuck in my head. Thanks Lil Nas X. A horse named Panini! Stuffed animals at bedtime that are being extra! "F" is for the fringe on a western wear jacket! This is a cute ABC book written by Lil Nas X. Oliver loves Old Town Road and I thought this would be a great choice for him. It is a little behind his reading level but he enjoyed it nonetheless.

When I saw this book was written by Lil Nas X, I just had to read it. Lil Nas X went viral for his song "Old Town Road" and his supporters ended up being a lot younger than one would've expected! I am glad to see he created a picture book for those fans. I also like how he represents black men in a way we don't usually see, which is in cowboy boots and riding horses! The illustrations are vivid and there is even a page that looks like Instagram posts of Lil Nas X in different country outfits. I When I saw this book was written by Lil Nas X, I just had to read it. The illustrations are vivid and there is even a page that looks like Instagram posts of Lil Nas X in different country outfits. I especially like this page, too, because it talks about his love of fringe, feathers and fake fur. Lil Nas X got some negative feedback when he came out as a gay man, and I feel like in this book he embraces himself to the full extent! I love his pink hat and outfits, and I am also happy that I now know who "Panini" is in his song (his pony)! This book is super cute, and with each page, sometimes every other page, there is a different letter of the alphabet. I would recommend this book to a child who already knows their ABC's, as this book does a better job at talking about the letters than helping to teach them. The words are a little silly and boring, however, the illustrations are cute and informative, so I rated the book 4 stars. The last letter, Z, is for ZZZ, and I like that they included a sound in here, especially at the end, so it would be something the kids could leave with... ZZZ sounds like zzz! Would probably not include this book on my book shelf in class unless my students were Lil Nas X fans.

Although the country life depicted in this alphabet book by Lil Nas X is far from the one with which I'm familiar, I enjoyed this picture book version of his own life. Starting with A for adventure and ending with a sleepy sound, the book will clearly appeal to the singer's fans, especially since there is a reference to Old Town Road, a place but also the name of his long-running hit. My favorite pages would have to be the two devoted to F, featuring fringe, feathers, and fake fur, and possibly the S for Swag page since apparently Lil Nas X enjoys taking care of himself and looking his best even when he's bound for bed. (Note to self: It might be a good idea to comb your hair each morning, even if you aren't going anywhere. Be more like Lil Nas X.) The book leaves readers feeling good and smiling as they consider all those stuffed animals and that pony named Panini. While some of the phrases associated with the letters could be longer, this book gets the job done while acknowledging the importance of resilience, dreams, and supportive families. I ended up liking it a lot more than I expected to.

Quite good but I am really tired of authors cheating for letters (x in this case). Maybe just don't write an alphabet book if you can't come up with something for every letter. This book really could have just been a heart warming story about family and the country without the gimmick of making it a concept book. The collective eye roll and sighing of the children's literature community that happens every time a celebrity publishes another picture book can no doubt be seen and heard on distant planets. But this one was quite charming, proving its mettle throughout. I'm pleasantly surprised to find it tells a good story while working its way through the alphabet with aplomb. Delightful! Lil Nas X deserves every single good thing, and I'm so glad that he's being celebrated by kids in addition to older audiences. This reminded me of those old viral videos where students were going wild over Old Town Road - like Lil Nas X and the song, this book is really unique and unapologetic. Celebrity kids books tends to be awful (looking at you Tim Tebow) but this was super entertaining and funny. It's also got a great underlying message about accepting who you are and embracing differences. A cute and simple story about Lil Nas X and his day in the country with his pony, as highlighted by the alphabet. The artwork was bright, clean, and colorful. The story flowed and wasn’t too gimmicky. Definitely a great purchase, especially for representation.

I may be partial because I just love Lil Nas X, but I thought this was just the cutest take on the ABCs! I didn't grow up in the country but I could see a lot of little kids who aren't around city life identifying with this. For: country fans; readers looking for a sweet ABC book with a few references for those who would know them (but it's not necessary to know who he is to enjoy the book). Possible red flags: floating boots; some may find underwhelming. I chose this as one of my niece's 3rd birthday gifts; the illustrations sold me, brought to life with the color of Lil Nas X's personality. I want her to always have the "swagger" and joy she has now, and this book encourages that. It'll have its haters, but this was a sweet abecedary picture book centering a Black family in the country, with delightful Old Town Road Easter eggs peppered throughout. If your kid liked the song (and, let's be honest, who didn't?) and is learning their ABC's, go for it!
