Featuring many of Bellmer’s surreal/erotic drawings, paintings and sculptures as well as his classic series of Doll photographs, Death, Deisre, and the Doll also tells the complete story of Bellmer’s remarkable life, from Nazi Germany to the inner circle of the Paris Surrealists and beyond. It is a fascinating story which encompasses the history of both surrealist and erotic art and literature, and which firmly positions Hans Bellmer at the forefront of the 20th Century avant-garde. De Sade, Bataille, Jean de Berg and André Pieyre de Mandiargues are just some of the authors whose work Bellmer enhanced with his incredibly perverse and complex illustrations. With his legendary Doll, Bellmer established one of the most disturbing creations in modern art, while his text The Anatomy of the Image remains crucial to understanding the eciprocity between body and imagination. When people recommend books to friends, they often make the mistake of recommending books that they themselves enjoyed, not necessarily what would appeal to the friend. Having written that, there are very few people to whom I would recommend this incredibly well researched, érudite, humane, and philosophical book on the surrealistically degenerate sexual art as well as life of Hans Bellmer, a truly mad and uniquely gifted artist. One can see how much of art is derivative to a large extent. One can see how much of art is derivative to a large extent. Not so with Bellmer. This is unique madness from a brilliantly creative mind. Again, due to its nature, for a limited audience who know what they are getting into with this one.

Considering the fact that I had not heard of Hans Bellmer or seen any of his works before I picked up this text, this book was an interesting journey for me. I was moved from trepidation, to fascination, to disgust, back to fascination and consideration, and finally to a tenuous understanding. Hans Bellmer, was, if nothing else, a remarkable man with a remarkable mind and a remarkable talent. While I haven't yet decided what to make of him and his works, this account was very thorough and I feel Considering the fact that I had not heard of Hans Bellmer or seen any of his works before I picked up this text, this book was an interesting journey for me. While I haven't yet decided what to make of him and his works, this account was very thorough and I feel I have found in this book the necessary resources to work on forming an opinion eventually - it's a lot to take in. Whether you are looking to do research on surrealism and eroticism or just looking for an interesting read, this book comes with my recommendation and stamp of approval. Be prepared to be rivited and revolted.
